“Rick Berry did four paintings throughout the afternoon in his unplanned improv method — scribbling with the paint and lifting highlights until he found direction in the act of painting. Rick, as usual, was as inspiring as a speaker as he was a painter.” Irene Gallo writing about ART OUT LOUD 7 at Museum of American Illustration, Sept 24, 2011.

Rick, could you please explain how you make these monochromatic improv paintings? I tried one myself, but I was dissatisfied with the flow of the medium and the board which was too absorbant. I guess the paint mustn’t dry too quickly if you need some time to let the painting “talk to you”. I did it on a gessoed illustration board with turpentine for a start (then I moved to linseed oil, because the turps was too siccative).

Thanks, it looks like the link was there, but got clobbered by some extra punctuation somewhere… I fixed it.
